Your braids are a great way to keep your hair protected from exposure to the elements and ensure that nothing spoils your fun during vacation time. But braids can be more than that! I like to think of braids as part of your personal style, a unique way to express yourself, your mood, and your personality. If you want to enhance the beauty and uniqueness of your braids, I always suggest decorating them with accessories. You’ll find all kinds of them!
In this article, I’ll explain the step-by-step process for decorating braids with strings, the many options for cornrows with beads, and how to take proper care of your hair jewelry and accessories. Keep reading to learn all the secrets to beaded braids and choose the style that suits you the most—or try different ones according to the occasion!
How to Decorate Your Braids With String
One of the easiest ways to enhance the beauty of your braids—no matter if you opt for classic box braids, cornrows, French braids, or any other style—is by decorating them with string. You can buy thread specifically designed for hair made from nylon or polyester, although for temporary decoration, you can also use cotton thread or even wool. Note that with those materials, colors will fade pretty soon and they will break easily, so they are not for leaving them permanently.
When you are decorating braids with string, you begin by cutting a piece of thread at least twice the length of your braids. You pass the thread through the braid near the scalp, and then you cross it over the braid creating a symmetrical pattern. At the end of the braid, you simply tie the string or secure it with a rubber band. Finally, you cut the remaining thread, and that’s it!
You can decorate all your braids or just some, and you can use a single color of thread or more than one. I also like mixing different sizes of thread depending on the thickness. Your imagination is the limit!
How to Choose the Perfect Beads for Your Braids
Decorating your braids with beads is like wearing clothes: You have many choices regarding colors, combinations, materials, textures, sizes, and so on. For example, you may choose beads that contrast your hair tone or ones that match it, and the effect on your overall look will be radically different! You can add just a bunch of tiny beads to the end of each braid, or heavily accessorize your hairstyle for a stunning effect.
One thing to consider is that hair accessories add weight to your braids, so when you are wearing beaded braids this creates a bit more tension on your scalp. A great idea is to opt for cornrows with beads, since these braids are created attached to the scalp, they don’t move, and thus are more lightweight than box braids. Another lightweight protective style is twists, and of course, you can add colorful beads to them too!
How to Decorate Braids with Beads
You can include them right from the start, during your hair appointment, or you can add them to your existing braids later. There are different methods for adding beads to your braids. One is using floss, the other is using a threading tool. Sometimes, with big braids and beads, you simply pull the braid through the bead and secure it with a rubber band, it can be a black or color rubber band, so it won’t fall off. In this case, we wet the braid first and twist its end so it will go through the bead—think about threading a needle!
Something to take into account is choosing the right size of beads according to the diameter of your braids. Choosing beads too small means the braid won’t fit through the hole. Shells: If you are spending a beach vacation in Puerto Rico, nothing like sea shells to enhance that unique natural look of summer hair. They come in different colors, shapes, and sizes. I’ve seen people decorating their braids with shells they picked themselves on the beach! You’ll look like a mermaid coming right out of the ocean.
Pearls: A classy, romantic look that will catch the eyes of everyone around you. It’s like turning your braided hairstyle into a tiara! You can easily add pearls to your hairpins, safety pins, or strings.
Viking coils: A powerful accessory you can take out and use many times, whenever you get braids! They look great either in braids or in dreadlocks, and either men or women can wear them.
Dream catchers: They are lightweight but big enough to call everyone’s attention! I particularly like them with dreadlocks because I believe they add spiritual meaning to your braiding style.
Feathers: Another natural element that’s both versatile and beautiful. They come in different colors and sizes and allow you to enhance any style. We already mentioned dream catchers, many of them include feathers as well.
Split fasteners: Are you on a tight budget? Guess what? You don’t need to spend a lot of money to achieve a unique style! You can get these with other office supplies for just a few bucks. The golden color definitely looks great on any tone of natural hair.
Safety pins: And since we are speaking about everyday elements you can use to beautify your braids, how about including safety pins? You can add small beads, pearls, or other accessories to them to personalize them as hairpins, or keep them alone for a rebel look!
Hair charms: This has been one of my favorite hair accessories since I was a girl! I have a collection of hair charms. Butterflies, flowers, trees, leaves, birds, or any other design you wish for, you’ll find it!
Hair rings: They are larger than beads and you can easily put them or take them off your braids. They come in metal, wood, plastic, and other materials, you can place them all over your braids or just on a couple of locs to enhance your style.
Colorful rubber bands: This is one of the simplest, yet most popular ways to decorate your braids with different colors. Children who come to Sunny Braids adore them! They are cheap and easy to install. Just make sure you clip them carefully when removing them, to avoid accidentally cutting hair.
Hair jewelry: If you want to level up your style, and decorate your braids so your protective hairstyle becomes a piece of art, you’ll find unique pieces of hair jewelry made to last for many years. Cómo decorar tus trenzas con hilo

Puedes comprar hilo específico para el cabello elaborado en nailon o poliéster, aunque para decoración temporal también puedes utilizar hilo de algodón o incluso lana. Ten en cuenta que con esos materiales, los colores se desvanecerán muy pronto y se romperán fácilmente, por lo que no son para dejarlos permanentemente.
Cuando decoras trenzas con hilo, comienza cortando una hebra de hilo de al menos el doble del largo de tus trenzas. Pasas el hilo por la trenza cerca del cuero cabelludo y luego lo cruzas sobre la trenza creando un patrón simétrico. Al final de la trenza, simplemente atas el cordón o lo aseguras con una banda elástica. Finalmente cortas el hilo restante y ¡listo!
